each year, graduating graphic designers at the maryland institute college of art are given the opportunity to create and design a theme for their graduation exhibition. in 2007, we used this opportunity to make the statement ‘we are here’ as a reference to the importance and prominence of the design department in the school’s future, as well as to mark this important milestone in our lives and careers.
ON PROCESS
as project manager + designer, i was heavily involved with all aspects of the process, from planning + conceptualization to sourcing vendors + installation. working with the team of 8 other students was a rewarding experience, allowing me to develop my skills in communication and leadership as well as being able to help push the project through in under 4 weeks. additionally, one of the most exciting interactions i had was with typographer joshua darden (http://dardenstudios.com), contacting him and then negotiating the use of his – at that time – unreleased font, jubilat. all in all, it was a great chance to experience all aspects of bringing a project to life and seeing it through to the end.
ON DESIGN
to emphasize the notion of graduation as a milestone; a moment frozen in time, 7 clocks (a reference to the year of our graduation, 2007) were installed above the entrance to the department, each one painted fluorescent orange and powered by a single AA battery. the clocks represented us – as individuals, and as a group – leaving school as one (each clock set to the exact same time before being turned on) and following different paths as we moved on (each clock’s battery having slightly different capacities and coming to rest at a different time).
when taking the identity and applying it to our space, we wanted to extend our definition of ‘here’ from not only time (graduation as a milestone) but also space, demarcating our exhibition space on campus. to do so, we filled our space both inside and out with orange dots, making the area visible through the glass walls of the exterior as well as guiding visitors through our floor plan.
